Laser Resurfacing
Lasers work by emitting a powerful collimated beam of light, which causes a superficial burn and removes the outer layers of the skin. As new living cells replace layers of dead skin cells, the skin tightens and grows back smoother.
No other cosmetic surgery procedure is as effective as laser skin resurfacing in treating discoloration due to sun damage ("age spots") or deep wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle activity or to heavy sun exposure. In addition, laser resurfacing tightens up the skin and improves its texture. There will be a demarcation line between the skin that was treated and the skin that was not. The demarcation line is strategically placed into the hairline and under the jaw line in order to be easily camouflaged.
The procedure is carried out in an outpatient surgery center under general or local anesthesia.
After the procedure, there will be crusting, weeping and swelling for seven to ten days on average. Additionally, depending on skin type and extent of damage, the face will have a pink glow for two to four months on average. This glow can be camouflaged with makeup after two weeks. No sun exposure is allowed as long as the pink glow is present. This discoloration is a sign that the skin is still building new connective tissue and continues to tighten.
Not everybody is a candidate for this procedure. Patients with connective tissue disorders, with a history of herpes 1 or 2, patients who have active acne or those who used an acne medication called Accutane in the recent past should be carefully screened and evaluated. Moreover, people who spend a lot of time outdoors and cannot avoid sun exposure for two to four months are unlikely candidates for laser skin resurfacing.
